Mermaids if you are not living probably under a rock then you definitely know what a Mermaid is. If you are a fan of Disney movies in your childhood, you should have heard about the Aerial, who lives under the sea and has a head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. That’s what a mermaid is.
In folklore of Asia, Europe, Asia and Africa mermaids have got a special place. In most of the folklore mermaids are considered as extremely beautiful . They are sometimes associated with dangers like storms, shipwrecks, drownings. While on the contrary they are associated with benevolence like saving lives, falling in love with humans, helping the humans to reach their destination.
Accoding to the folklores,there are not only mermaids but also merman, that is the male equivalent and their population is collectively known as merpeople.

Over the years many people have reported seeing mermaids. Some discovered them as in tales the most beautiful creatures with melodious voices while there are others who claim that the mermaids were very scary creatures with sharp teeth like that of a carnivore and scary faces. Historically, it has been reported that Christopher Columbus during the exploration of the Caribbean may have seem Mermaid like creatures but there are no proper evidences.
Some scientists think that there is another explanation. They say there are creatures like dugongs and manatees that are often considered Mermaid like. So, these sightseeing might actually be misunderstood run-ins with these sea creatures.
These sightseeings have been rarely reported now. In 2012 US National Ocean service confirmed that no evidences of mermaids are still found anywhere.
It’s still a wonder that if the mermaids really do exist somewhere in the depths of the oceans. Many people continue to believe on it. Maybe we will find them someday under the depths of the seas.
