It is because of the light they reflect, the sun emits the white light which is combination of all colors of visible wavelength viz (the rainbow colors) violent, indigo, blue, green ,yellow , orange and red (VIBGYOR)
When this white light falls on a object ,they appear to have the particular color because they are able to selectively absorb and reflect certain wavelengths (colours) of this visible white light
So, the grass appears green because it absorbs light at two wavelengths, both Red and blue while reflecting green. This reflected green lights reaches our eyes and we see the grass green in color.
